♦ Line Dancing News & Reviews
PORTARLINGTON 2010
once apon a time.
A group of innocent line dancers from Ulverstone (Tasmania) decided to go to the Great Unknown to see the Wild, Wild West (well north really).Little did they know that theWitch Doctor had cast an evil spell on Portarlington. Once every 100 years there would be rain, lightning & thunder, hail, torrential rain, trees uprooted, roofs blown away, road weather alerts etc. All aimed to cause major headaches for the VLDA committee.
Some decided to Fly Like a Bird, while others took a Slow Boat over Velvet Waters. They all met at their Rendezvous and drove in the Big Red Car. These Women On The Move, said Shut Up And Drive down the Heartbeat Highway to what they thought was A Better Life. They had A Pretty Good Start, it was just like Dancing Down Under, great company, great music, packed dance floor. No Matter What they were going to have Too Much Fun.
On the second day the curse began. A Travellin’ Man came to Teach Me To Dance, Waltz, A Little Rhumba & 1st Cha. Like a Hero he helped us Work It Out, Side by Side. Usually they Love A Rainy Night but when they got theirToes wet Walking In The Rain they thought God Must Be Busy. Stormy Weather caused a power failure and the Worst 15 Minutes of My New Life. With Patient Heart and Determination they said “What’s Up- Senorita, Hold On we Gotta Dance. But the VLDA said No Way Jose. However Cowgirls Don’t Cry & Believe It Or Not they had to Be Strong.
The Breakaway from dancing allowed them to have Pinacoladas, Champagne On Ice and Rum N’ Coco Colaah while playing cards. This was the start of their downfall. Those less fortunate were Downtown, eating Cornbread & Chicken. Later that day Powerade restored the Electric Dream and they got the call. Come On Over and Just Dance With Me. They didn’t waste Precious Time & there was a Stampede followed by lots of Clowning Around with Angels In Disguise. And We Danced until the Midnight Waltz (which was at 11.03pm actually)
The next day, for Religion & Glory I Never Work On Sunday but they did dance at the Request social. They thought God’s Been Good To Me. They were still Ladylike and hadn’t been Caught In The Act yet. Then without Rhyme Or Reason there was another Storm with a Thunderbolt. They were Swept Away to their Waterloo. No Sunshine Express today, Salavie.
For the Girls Night Out it was their Destiny to wear Looseboots and stray from the Strait & Narrow, Working Hard for the Money. I Remember- When You Walked In- Somebody with a Shotgun said Turn Me Loose or there will be Murder on the Dance Floor. They ended up Dancing In The Dark, singing Happy Birthday to Mr President (possibly A Gigalo). They were Out of Control, talk about Dance with The Devil Or Me. Everybody Knows that First Impressions count. These girls were Playing with Fire and never did find their Pot Of Gold. Maybe it’s A Little Too Late for Mercy . Hopefully the VLDA won’t Rub It In and let these girls come back Another Day.
So ends the sad tale of the Portarlington Virgins,
Lost at Heart, possibly Forever & Ever.

Two Portarlington Virgins A Travellin' Man, have laptop Clowning Around with Fallen Angels (/ Virgins)
will dance an Angel in Disguise

Sunday night Social at Portarlington
birthday Masquerade dinner dance
24th october
The Bootscootin’ Devils decided it would be nice to have a “posh do” for our birthday social. So on the 24th we hosted our 1st Dinner Dance, guests were asked to wear after five attire & a mask was optional. We catered for 72 people & it was great to see everyone done up in their finery, rather than the usual jeans & polo shirts. Some dancers went to extra ordinary lenghts, even to creating their dresses ( just don't ask Miho why she no longer has curtains in her toilet!!!- her dress looked lovely)The ladies were presented with wrist corsages and the men button holes. Pre dinner punch & nibbles were provided; we then had a delicious two course meal (catered by The Rowing Club). Birthday cake and light refreshments were available if anyone still had room.
The $1,000 we raised from this event was donated to Gran’s Van- a free food service for the needy. Speeches were nicely brief and then onto dancing. As this was a dinner dance and non line dancing partners were encouraged to come along we did some old time sets, Progressive Barn Dance, Canadian 3 Step / Gay Gordans (this became the Gay Canadian Gordans) There was a crash course in “Old time dancing for dummies” and apart from a few minor collisions these progressive dances went quite well. One very experienced line dancer commented that the progressive dances were more tiring than most of our line dances.
Heather Hayes from the East Coast celebrated the anniversary of her birthday on the night (I won’t tell you how old, just pick number between 64 & 66). It was very good of her to come and celebrate her special day with us all.
From the comments we received on the night, we will make this an annual event, and call it Bootscootin’ Devils Birthday Masked Ball. Everyone will be more than welcome to come along and bring their other half is they wish. Keep an eye on our web page for all Tassie Socials for 2010.
linnie will post the best photos when we sifted thru the hundreds that were taken.
7th November
garage sale / fete/ afternoon social
(THERE’S a lot going on there, isn’t there!)
Well we have had our 1st garage sale / fete/ social and what an exhausting experience. For the past few months now we have slowly been collecting “treasures”, making crafts, jams & cakes etc. The Friday night before the big day we were still getting donations and it took us about 4 hours to set up (that does not include the time Terry & Ria wasted riding donated push bikes around the dance floor !! big kids) We had some buyers turn up on the Friday night wanting an early peek. On the day we all had a very early start (I got up at 6 am & I don’t DO mornings – luckily for me Lesley had been to Macca’s and got me a BIG coffee) and so the day began. It was really amazing some of the cr*p people bought.
Some of the better selling items were the jams (Ria’s Laurel berry jam the best I have tasted), cakes, honey, Devonshire teas, books, plants and sausages ( Denise & David sizzled – sausages that is!).
We did manage to do some dancing, just to show the dreaded general public what line dancing is about. We had a very appreciative audience in a set of twins (about 2 years old) but I really think the clincher was the Wiglgles version of head shoulders knees & toes. You just gotta know your audience. From this, our have choreographed a dance to the Big Red Car, just for the littlies. we will post it next year.
When the garage sale finished, we had already teed up with the local Lions Club to collect unsold items to be recycled into their op shop. Some soft toys have been redistributed to the local Women’s shelter. At the end of the day we had raised $1,750.00 for a Devonport Disability Group. So several groups benefited from our day.
By the time other line dancing groups arrived for the afternoon social we were pretty well done in, but of course we soldered on and danced until 5.30pm. The afternoon social was a fairly relaxed do.
SCOOTIN’ MOLENDA MATES
Earlier this year we were approached by Rossi , to assist in a youth program for Molenda Lodge, Ulverstone(see their web site for furhter info as to what they do). The aim was to teach line dancing to the group so that they would be able to go to local aged care facilities to entertain the residents.
The Bootscootin’ Devils agreed & donated our time, so began the 12 week program on Wednesdays. Rossi asked us to come up with a name for the group, which we did, & designed a logo for them (thanks to Linnie for their stickers).
At the start some of the dancers looked less than enthusiastic, I’m sure they thought line dancing was “ pretty lame” but then again so did I when I first started. In a short time they began to enjoy themselves and buckled down to learn dance step names, dance sequences & dance floor etiquette.
What started as a 1/2 hour session grew to 1 hour. In those 12 weeks the group learnt 14 line dances, from basic beginner dances to beginner plus dances like Chic Chic Boom. which is a fabulous effort.
We held a Graduation party on the 25 /11. Terry, our President presented the dancers with certificates & Maccas vouchers and then onto party time. (lots of great pics but unfortunately we can't publish due to privacy)
The Scootin’ Molenda Mates have done 2 demos and now appear quite confident performing in front of an audience. They aim to continue their demos at other facilities in the school holidays, needing only minimal assistance from us.
Some of the dancers have enjoyed line dancing so much, they have decided to join the regularTuesday Beginners classes and I’m sure we will make them feel welcome the Club.
Who knows Scootin’ Molenda Mates may lead to “our” own youth group branch some time in the future..
